Greek Music Journey Concert Series

GREEK MUSIC JOURNEY

AN ACCLAIMED CONCERT SERIES

HIGHLIGHTING THE DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIVE ASPECTS OF GREEK MUSIC

GREEK MUSIC JOURNEY (GMJ) Concert series was founded and established in 1997 by Elena Maroulleti with a purpose to promote and preserve different aspects of the representative music of Greece such as the traditional, folk, popular folk and rembetika genres which comprise the basis of Greek music.

When
GMJ was first introduced it mainly featured New York-based representative Greek American singers and musicians and performances were given mostly at local venues in Queens with the exception of a series of concerts given for the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival in August of 1998, 1999 and 2000, as well as GMJ-1999 given on March 7, 1999 at the Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center.  This sold out concert featured some 34 performers consisting of musicians, singers and folk dancers in a one of a kind musical production which highlighted all aspects of the representative music of Greece such as byzantine, demotic, island folk, rembetika and contemporary.

Since 2006 Greek Music Journey has been featuring distinguished artists directly from Greece, while all concerts from the series are given at renowned theater venues in Manhattan. Between 2006 and 2010 GMJ was hosted at New York’s landmark theater, The Town Hall and since 2013 at yet another historic Manhattan theater, The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College. In 2013 the series has expanded to include two annual concerts instead of one with the first given in the spring and the second in the fall.

Each new concert is dedicated to a specific theme thus making each new performance unique and one of a kind. For each new concert, the organization carefully selects the most renowned and representative singers and musicians who serve the selected music theme to come to New York and perform. Over the years AKTINA has presented several different musical tributes with leading Greek stars such as Alkistis Protopsalti (2006), Kostas Makedonas (2007), Manolis Mitsias (2008), Melina Aslanidou (2009, 2010, 2013), Lavrentis Machairitsas (2013, 2015 and returning November 3, 2017), Nasia Konitopoulou, Dimitris Kontogiannis with folk violinist Michalis Gampierakis (2014), Giannis Savvidakis (2014), Yannis Kotsiras (2015, 2017), Eleni Tsaligopoulou & Bogaz Musique (2016), Babis Tsertos in a Tribute to the Great Rembetika of Greece (2016), Giannis Zouganelis (coming November 3, 2017).

The two annual concerts from the GMJ series are given to benefit the non-profit/public service and commercial-free radio and television programs, AKTINA FM on WNYE 91.5FM and AKTINA TV on WNYE Channel 25.
